The B2B media and information content services industry,
though still containing many niche players, is becoming
increasingly concentrated.

- The top five players account for 35% of the total
market, with the next fifteen in revenue in revenue
rank comprising another 32%;
- Exhibitions and trade
publishing are the most concentrated sectors,
with the top 5 players generating 50% and
41% of sector revenues, respectively;
- The five
leading information services providers make up
1/3 of the sector;
- The directories and catalogs
sector remains be far the most fragmented; the
top five
players make up
just 6% of sector revenues, and the tip
25 only a combined 14%
VNU is the leader in B2B media and information
services revenues, with 2003 sales of $3.4 billion;
is followed
by Reed Business Information (Reed Elsevier) at
$2.1 billion, Experian with $1.9 billion, IDG at
$1.5
billion, and D&B and IMS Health, each with $1.3
billion
Most market leaders are substantially international
in scope; each of the six largest firms generates
at least 8% of revenues outside of North America
and Europe.
The Performance of B2B Leaders

The largest players in first half 2004 revenues
mirror YE01-03 players with the exception of GFK,
which supplants McGraw-Hill in the number ten spot
- UBM, GFK, DMGT, IMS, D&B, and Experian reported
wide ranging OI growth on a narrow range of revenue
gains.
- TNS had the fastest top line growth but
does not report operating income for its in-scope
B2B divisions.
- The largest players, VNU and RBI,
reported solid profit growth (4.8% and 12.2%,
respectively) on modestly declining reported revenues.
