Italians and payment cards: moving towards prudence:

  • The number of credit and debit cards in circulation in Italy remained stable, but the number of active credit cards decreased (-5.7% in 2009). The activity rate also went down to 45% of the total.
  • The issue and circulation of revolving cards reduced by -36.7% and
    -10.2% respectively compared to the previous year, with flexible credit cards with optional repayment cover being the preferred choice.
