In the UK an investigation has been launched into whether any clients of four rogue private investigators convicted of fraud breached the Data Protection Act. The private investigators concerned were given jail sentences last year and had specialized in illegally obtaining private information from organisations such as banks, utility companies and HM Revenue and Customs by purporting to be authorized to see this information.  The Information Commissioner’s Office is looking at whether those who hired the private investigators may also be in breach of the Data Protection Act.
