bradford 300Mike Bradford, Owner and Founder of Regulatory Strategies, can now confirm the next steps in the adoption process for the new data protection law.  The regulation will now move to the final stages of negotiation.  Trialogues between the Commission, the Parliament and the Council will begin on 24 June 2015 to resolve differences between the three proposals and agree the definitive legislation.  The intention is to complete the process by the end of the year although it remains to be seen whether this is an achievable goal.

The regulation will then be in force in all Member States two years after that.  Unlike the current Data Protection Directive, which required Members States to enact legislation – the Data Protection Act in the UK – the regulation will be adopted verbatim without the need for legislation.   Hence the EU drive for a single market without different interpretations.
