The Chief People Officer (CPO) for GBG, the experts in digital identity, has been named as one of the top LGBT+ leaders in the world. James Miller has been named in the OUTstanding 100 LGBT+ Executives List.

The annual list – which is presented by Yahoo finance and curated by Involve, an organisation that champions diversity and inclusion in the workplace – showcases LGBT+ business leaders and allies who are breaking down barriers and creating more inclusive workplaces across the world.

Since joining GBG in 2015, James has led the organisation’s People Strategy, successfully fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion. With more than 1,000 team members located across 15 countries and broad-ranging cultures, James is driven by a belief in fairness and consistency for all.

James has spearheaded work on GBG’s diversity and inclusion programme, ‘be/yourself’, which is designed to ensure that everybody feels comfortable identifying as their authentic self and has allies at the workplace. The five different focus areas within the programme are – age and experience; gender equality; neurodiversity, accessibility and mental health; race, religion, nationality and location; and sexual identities, including LGBTQ+ and gender fluidity.

James uses his executive position to drive an ethos, and to start programmes, that nurtures a working culture that supports all team members, ensuring that GBG sees diversity as its strength and its openness to different world views gives GBG a broader perspective that delivers better results.

As CPO, James implements webinars, company wide Q&A sessions and uses his platform to drive conversation and change for the LGBT+ community. Externally, James is an avid speaker, sharing both his professional and personal perspectives to effect change. He also mentors LGBT+ colleagues, is an active member of the HRC and is a member of McKinsey’s Alliance group of prominent LGBT+ leaders.

In its most recent employee engagement survey, conducted by Gallup, 94% of current team members said they “would recommend GBG as a great place to work”.

James Miller, GBG CPO, comments: “When I started working in the 1990s,  I saw no ‘out’ people in the office – even work friends who I knew were gay masked their lives. There was a fear to reveal your true identity at work.

“Now, I’m proud to help break the cycle for LGBT+ teammates and youth. I’m proud to be a visible and successful leader in my industry, who is also gay. At GBG, we strive to make the workplace inviting and comfortable for all so that everybody, regardless of their sexual orientation, can bring their full authentic selves to work. That’s why it is an honour to be recognised among such inspirational individuals, who are paving the way for inclusive workplaces, and challenging perceptions and discrimination.”

Founder & CEO of INvolve, Suki Sandhu OBE, said: “I’m thrilled to be celebrating this trailblazing group of global LGBT+ and Ally Role Models who are championing inclusion and inspiring the next generation of talent. It’s vital that the LGBT+ community can succeed and be authentic in business and beyond, and these Role Models are essential in dismantling barriers to progression and creating opportunities for LGBT+ employees to thrive.”
