Global smartphone shipments surpassed 1bn in 2013. IDC, the IT research group, estimated that smartphone shipments in 2013 rose to just over 1bn – a 38 per cent increase from the previous year and double the 494m recorded in 2011. . Investors seem to be concerned about the margins of the two largest manufacturers Apple and Samsung Electronics which are impacted by the rise of market share of low-cost handsets.
Apple sold 153m smartphones last year, an increase from 136m in 2012 but representing a decline in market share from 19 per cent to 15 per cent. Samsung, which produces a far wider range of smartphones than its US rival and ranks as the world’s top smartphone vendor, increased its market share from 30 per cent to 31 per cent, shipping 314m devices.
