The data protection issue has had a new development in the past month, with a focus on the EU-US data flows and the threats on the data of EU citizens revealed by the PRISM issue.

Commissioner Reding is all the more insisting on the need to get a harmonized EU set of rules for data protection and is trying to put more pressure on the institutions to adopt the data protection package.  But debates at Council showed that Member States are still divided and it will now be up to the Lithuanian presidency to go on with the dossier. In the European Parliament, the vote in the LIBE committee has been postponed to September.
