To BIIA Members in Europe:
On Wednesday, 6 April 2016, somewhat earlier than anticipated, the European Council published the final version of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. To download the document please click on this link: GDPR_Final_6 April 2016
The next steps and timelines to getting it finally agreed are as follows:
- The document had its first reading in the EU Council yesterday (7 April 2016)
- The LIBE committee will assess the document in an extraordinary session on 11 April and MEPs will have time until midnight of the same day to file amendments.
- The LIBE committee will vote on the text on Tuesday 12 April 2016
- Following the adoption in the LIBE Committee the text will be discussed in plenary on Wednesday 13 April and subsequently voted upon the day after, 14 April.
Please note that, although the procedure allows for the possibility to table amendments, it is very unlikely that there will be changes to the text. In the LIBE extraordinary session where the final text will be discussed, the item is scheduled for only 15 minutes.
From a first read it seems that the changes are limited to language and consistency, as expected.
A more in depth analysis is currently being undertaken by ACCIS and I will pass this on when it is available which should be early next week.
