SCHUFA is already using the AWS Cloud Region Frankfurt for some applications and plans to gradually migrate these and other existing products and services to the AWS Europe Cloud.

SCHUFA manages creditworthiness information on around 69 million private individuals and 6.6 million companies in Germany and, as part of the overall economic security architecture, has a special responsibility towards consumers and corporate customers. With the decision to migrate to the European Sovereign Cloud, SCHUFA is underlining its high standards of data protection, security and digital sovereignty.

Dr. Klaus Kolitz, Member of the Management Board and CTO, SCHUFA Holding AG

As SCHUFA, we have a special responsibility when it comes to handling sensitive data. With the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, we combine state-of-the-art cloud technology with maximum control, transparency and security – in the interests of our customers and partners,” says Dr. Klaus Kolitz, Member of the Executive Board and CTO, SCHUFA Holding AG.

Powerful IT infrastructure and sovereignty

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud has been in operation since January 15, 2026. The German Federal Office for Information Security has supported AWS in the design of security and sovereignty features. In contrast to the AWS cloud, the Sovereign Cloud is operated, governed and supported exclusively within the EU. It is subject to European jurisdiction. The staff of Amazon’s European cloud consists exclusively of employees residing within the EU and the ability to completely decouple from the US parent company is also one of the core features of the European Sovereign Cloud.

“The use of the cloud enables us to support our corporate customers even better in the digitalization of their processes. At the same time, we want to meet the needs of consumers. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud offers us exactly what we need: sovereignty and the ability to innovate go hand in hand here,” says Kolitz.

Stéphane Israël, Managing Director AWS European Sovereign Cloud and Digital Sovereignty“SCHUFA is a trusted institution for millions of people across Germany, and we are proud to accompany their next step with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud provides SCHUFA with the innovation and security it expects from AWS – with additional sovereignty controls designed to meet Europe’s most demanding regulatory requirements,” adds Stéphane Israël, Managing Director AWS European Sovereign Cloud and Digital Sovereignty.

First SCHUFA services in the cloud

After careful consideration, SCHUFA selected the global market leader Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its cloud provider and has already migrated its first services to the AWS cloud region in Frankfurt. AWS is known for its comprehensive security and compliance services that meet the highest industry standards. AWS services are regularly certified and audited according to international security standards.

The free SCHUFA account launched in March 2026 with the new SCHUFA score runs in the cloud, as does the SCHUFA help portal and the SCHUFA service for the 100-day rule. Here are the services in detail:

  • The SCHUFA Account offers digital, anytime access to all credit-relevant data and the new SCHUFA Score. The SCHUFA Account is accessible via a web application—which can be accessed through a browser on a desktop PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone—as well as via a native SCHUFA app for iOS and Android.
  • The SCHUFA Help Portal is the central digital point of contact for consumers—for questions, concerns, and support regarding SCHUFA.
  • Through the 100-Day Rule service, consumers can have a payment default removed from SCHUFA’s database earlier than usual, provided that no other negative data—and no further information from debtor registers or insolvency notices—are on record.

Here are the most important questions and answers about the AWS European Sovereign Cloud:

1 What is the AWS European Sovereign Cloud?

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is an AWS cloud infrastructure specially developed for Europe. It is designed to meet the highest requirements for digital sovereignty: Operation, governance and support take place exclusively within the EU and under European control. Data remains entirely in Europe and is subject to European jurisdiction.

2 How does the AWS European Sovereign Cloud differ from the normal AWS cloud?

In contrast to the conventional AWS cloud, the European Sovereign Cloud offers additional control and protection mechanisms. These include the requirement that all employees must reside within the EU, the ability to completely decouple from the US parent company and technical and organizational precautions that exclude access from countries and organizations outside the EU. It is therefore not limited to storing data in Europe, but also ensures that operation, control and legal responsibility are entirely in European hands.

3. why is SCHUFA going to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud?

As a data-driven company with a special responsibility towards consumers and contractual partners, SCHUFA places the highest value on data security and regulatory compliance. By migrating to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, SCHUFA is strengthening its technological future viability, fulfilling upcoming regulatory requirements at an early stage and at the same time sending a clear signal of trust, security and digital responsibility.

4 What do security experts say about the AWS European Sovereign Cloud?

Security experts see sovereign cloud models such as the AWS European Sovereign Cloud as an important building block for companies in highly regulated industries. “The AWS European Sovereign Cloud or what Google is doing with Stackit: in our view, this is a future standard operating model in Germany and Europe,” said Thomas Caspers, Vice President of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The BSI is supporting AWS in designing the security and sovereignty features of the European Sovereign Cloud.
