2023 is “the best year ever” in the creation of new companies, says Informa D&B, reporting that, by the end of September, 39,042 companies had been created in Portugal, 5.6 percent more than in the same period last year

The previous record, which was reached in 2019, was 38,061 new companies created in the first nine months of the year.

In a statement, Informa D&B reports that two-thirds of sectors register growth in the creation of companies compared to the same period last year. Highlights include Transport, with 4,729 registrations (+1,596 registrations; +51 percent), Accommodation and catering (+394 registrations, +11 percent), Construction (+344 registrations, +17 percent) and General Services (+ 331 registrations, +16 percent).

Real estate activities are the sector with the greatest decline in company formation (-400 formations, -9.7 percent), a trend that has been observed in the majority of the last 12 months. Other sectors to record declines are Information and Communication Technologies (-146 registrations, -5.8 percent) and Industries, the main national export sector, whose number of registrations in these 9 months of 2023 was the lowest of all years.
