Over the last decade, credit reporting systems have evolved significantly with rapid advances in technology, new entrants in the financial services industry and the development of regulatory frameworks to protect the needs of consumers and businesses and to support the growth of both the credit reporting and financial services industries. In the ASEAN region many credit bureaus are either starting or planning to utilize these changes to offer alternative data products, advanced data analytics/scoring services as well as support cross border trade, the latter being key to the development of the region.

A report published by the World Bank Group and the International Committee on Credit Reporting in 2021 highlights four major trends affecting the credit reporting industry – Internationalisation (individuals and companies are becoming more mobile across borders), Digitalisation (emerging new data sources and application of machine learning models), Regulation (addressing the evolution of the industry while protecting consumer interests) and the COVID-19 pandemic (leading to financial hardship for many borrowers).

Against the backdrop of the significant transformations that both the credit reporting  and financial industry have undergone in the last three years and that they are likely to face in the coming years, it is believed that it would be very timely for all stakeholders involved in the credit reporting eco-system (regulators, credit reporting service providers and financial institutions) to come together to share  their insights on the recent changes that have occurred and will occur going forward  and discuss how they can work together to harness these opportunities for the development of the ASEAN region.

In this context, with Cambodia holding the current Chairmanship of ASEAN, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) in collaboration with Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC) is looking to host the first Regional Credit Reporting Convention in Siem Reap, Cambodia in November 2022 with the support of the Business Information Industry Association (BIIA) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Asia Credit Reporting Network (ACRN). to bring together regulatory and industry stakeholders on a single platform to discuss important issues that impact credit information and credit risk industries.
